The project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Government of Japan and implemented by the UN Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in collaboration with local partners in the region such as line ministries, academia and civil society.

To date, CounterMEASURE has produced:

• Platform CounterMEASURE: a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform to visualize plastic leakage data and pathways;
   
• Region-based approach of plastic pollution assessment and monitoring in rivers in Asia: a conceptual framework for assessment and monitoring of plastic pollution from rivers covering scoping, data collection, analysis, visualization and communication;
   
• Plastic Leakage Pathways: stories of plastic litter entering waterways and rivers, and
   
• Groups of universities, researchers, and NGOs in Asia with interest and expertise on subjects related to plastic leakage reduction.

The academia centered conference will have a special focus on:

• Biogas and Anaerobic Digestion. The World Biogas Association is co-organiser of the event.
   
• Waste-to-Energy. Sessions are chaired by Prof. Marco Castaldi (City University of New York), Chair of the Global Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT) & Prof. Nickolas Themelis (Columbia University), ex-Chair of WTERT.

For its 25^th anniversary, in response to requests from delegates, the programme of the ICBR 2020 will particularly focus on Battery Recycling Technologies. Indeed by 2020, the primary and the rechargeable battery industry will face the review of the Batteries Directive. Simultaneously, many new EV batteries will be introduced on the EV market as car manufacturers will have to meet stringent CO₂ emissions targets.

The conference will offer participants business opportunities through networking and communication on Battery Recycling including the latest processes under development and industrial processes. Plenary sessions will be complemented by many side events such as round tables, exhibitions, posters presentations in order to open the conference to innovative issues, processes and technologies.

CEN-CENELEC developed eight standards* containing generic principles to consider when addressing the material efficiency of energy-related products, such as

• extending product lifetime,
• ability to reuse components or recycle materials from products at end-of-life, and
• use of reused components and/or recycled materials in products.

'...the aim of this webinar is to present how these standards could be used by product-specific Technical Committees when developing product-specific or product group standards addressing material efficiency aspects'.

Background: Following the Dec-15 Circular Economy Action Plan,  Commission Implementing Decision C(2015) 9096 requested all three European standardisation organisations – CEN, CENELEC and ETSI – to develop standards on material efficiency aspects for energy-related products, such as durability, reparability and recyclability. The new focus on material/energy efficiency during the design phase complements the earlier focus on energy efficiency during the use phase of products. Both sets of standards support the implementation of 'Ecodesign' Directive 2009/125/EC.
